My Innovation Project

Day 1 of the ADL program, we were asked what was our idea to innovate in our learning environment. After much time considering and much research, I decided that blended learning would be the best approach towards innovation in my learning environment. Currently I teach in a 4th grade classroom in which students are expected to create a cohesive writting piece in response to a passage in their state exams. Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, we still see a significant learning gap in our students. Currently many of my students still struggle with simple grammer, punctuation and capitalization. Writting also seems to be something my students dread doing, it is extremely difficult to engage students in something they do not want to do.

Within the last few years this state exam was also transferred from paper based to now online based. While the content is still the same, changing the format of a test is practically a new ball game for many students, in particular those who are economically disadvantaged and only have access to a computer in school. Unfortunately, this is true in countless Title 1 schools in Houston. For these reasons I decided I wanted my innovation plan to address these opportunities in hopes of giving my students two essential skills, 1) writting skills and 2) keyboarding skills.

For my Disruptive Innovation course, I was asked to research blended learning and create a literature review, you can find that here. As I continue to work on this innovation project, I am feeling more and more confident that my students will benefit from this approach and maybe even change their views on writing.
