Learning Manifesto
Welcome to my learning manifesto, where I share my beliefs on education. I believe in creating a classroom where creativity, self-expression, and technology blend to prepare students for the future, fueled by my passion for equipping them to the best of my ability because I believe knowledge is power.
Passion
I can vividly recall my time in elementary school, participating in the GT program and relishing the freedom to unleash my creativity through projects, activities, and experiences. I have clear memories of making PowerPoint presentations, conducting research, and meticulously planning out my 'dream home.' I firmly believe that having the opportunity to express myself fully during those formative years played a crucial role in my later educational success.
When I became an educator, one thing I was absolutely certain about was creating a safe haven in my classroom—a space where creative ideas could flourish and where self-expression was encouraged. I firmly believe that fostering creativity and individuality in children allows them to develop a genuine love for learning.
The world is constantly evolving, and it's crucial to prepare students for the knowledge and skills they will need in the real world. I believe that technology can be a powerful tool in education, facilitating exploration of new ideas, collaboration with peers, and engagement with content in innovative ways. By integrating technology into my teaching practices, I aim to equip my students with the skills they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
Digital Learning
I believe a critical issue in education today is our unpreparedness for digital learning. While the world is advancing rapidly, our schools and colleges are struggling to keep up. When the pandemic hit, we were caught off guard by the sudden shift from in-person to online classes. Although some college courses were already online, many freshmen had never experienced digital learning before. This gap highlights the need to introduce students to the skills they'll need in today's workforce, where digital literacy is increasingly important.
I believe that in education, we are succeeding in more ways than one. Beyond teaching reading and math, we are instilling values that shape students into good individuals who contribute positively to society. In education, we are striving to diversify how we deliver instruction to cater to all learning styles. With the introduction of new strategies, ongoing training initiatives, and a continuous stream of educators adapting to the evolving world, we aim to meet the diverse needs of every student effectively.
Although there are some great things happening in education, I believe we're not fully preparing students for the future. Some educational approaches overly emphasize standardized testing or grades, while others do not go beyond the skills necessary in that particular grade. It's important for students to learn not just how to do well in school, but also how to succeed in life. Many students get to college without effective study habits, financial literacy, or research skills because they haven't learned these skills before. Creating successful students means fostering independence and a passion for learning that will succeed in any given educational setting and beyond that. To improve this, we need to start teaching these skills early, starting in elementary school. We should also continue to develop them with dedicated classes. Financial literacy can start as early as elementary school, and we can teach critical thinking and problem-solving skills through authentic learning experiences. Preparing students for college is important, but we must also look further ahead. In our rapidly changing world, we need to consider the future beyond just mathematics and sciences.
Digital learning can play a key role in developing these skills. Through digital learning we can empower students by offering them choices, ownership, and a voice through authentic learning experiences, the earlier the better. I believe digital learning helps students become independent learners who can succeed in a variety of learning environments. It prepares them for the modern world by teaching essential technology skills they'll need in the workforce. Digital learning also offers authentic experiences where students learn problem-solving and critical thinking skills. For this reason, I aim to make a positive impact within my organization by introducing blended learning in my classroom and further refining this approach over time. I hope to encourage others to join me in implementing digital learning in the classroom and perhaps inspire them to develop their own innovative ideas for digital education.
