COVA Framework

The COVA (Choice, Ownership and Voice through Authentic learning) approach gives the learner opportunities to learn through authentic learning experiences in which they take ownership over their learning. I believe this approach impacts my learning in the ADL program because we are experiencing what we are learning about through our authentic projects or innovation plans. It is motivating us to put our best efforts since everything we have done in the ADL program has been our own creation.  

The COVA model does appeal to me, as an upper elementary school teacher I believe this model can help create a student-centered learning environment which will result in independent learners. This will set a strong foundation for them later on throughout middle school, high school and beyond that. I believe through authentic and relevant learning experiences we are giving the students necessary skills they will use in the real world. They will become independent learners and thinkers who will be able to succeed in a variety of learning environments. 

The parts that I perceive as beneficial within the COVA approach are Ownership and Authentic learning. As I experience this approach I believe I am learning through these assignments such as my ePortfolio and innovation plan. Both of these are authentic and relevant to me and my environment. Ownership is another beneficial part of the COVA approach because I believe this will really pull the absolute best out of our learners. People want to take ownership over things they will be proud of. Giving students ownership will begin to prepare them as independent learners when they will have to face different learning environments and the real world.
